In this painting I’ve chosen to depict an old black and white photograph of Blaine Sergent, coal leader, putting up his check at the end of a workday in Harlan County, Kentucky, in 1946. In Harlan County, exists some of our country’s richest natural resources—and some of its poorest people. These people work in some of the most dangerous conditions known to humankind, and did so purely out of need and lack of options. Unfortunately these jobs often came with big tolls including Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP), a dust-induced scarring lung disease commonly called black lung), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung function impairment were some of the main killers of miners alongside blasting gone wrong, methane, and coal dust explosions. Far too many hard workers suffered at the hands of unregulated work conditions and the capitalistic exploits of Big Coal.
